It's all set theory...

Set is also the word with the most (different) definitions in the OED IIRC

The word with the most meanings in English is the verb 'set', with 430 senses listed in the Second Edition of the Oxford English Dictionary, published in 1989. The word commands the longest entry in the dictionary at 60,000 words, or 326,000 characters.

Help in parsing 1a and 6d would be greatly appreciated. Pretty sure I have the correct answer to 1a - not totally sure about 6d

Hi JayGray,

1a - The first and last letter are "Scunthorpe an initially" and these go around 18a reversed/"turning"

6d - An anagram/"off" of 10% if you write it out.

PS

I got the philospher at 20ac early on, and now I have 12d, but your hint for 16d hasn't helped. 25ac also eludes me, so I think I might give up for the night and go to bed.
I think my FOI was 11ac, closely followed by 9ac and 20ac. My favourites so far are 24ac and 15d.
I'll finish off tomorrow, but I think I may have to give up doing the cryptic on Saturdays. I'm not very sharp any more and I need too much help.

Hi Roof,

I'd be sad if you stopped doing the Prize, I always look forward to your contribution and hearing what you've been up to, with you Bridge and jam making:-) I think most of us need help when trying to solve these cryptic puzzles.

16D: "not a" is one of the words in the clue with the A removed, which comes after a word for "ghastly"

I also needed a lot of help but I'm improving with practice - although last week was especially difficult. This one took me a while to get started but looking at the thesaurus and sites which find words ending with certain letters was helpful this time too.

As I do more I need to use the sites a lot less I noticed.

I try and avoid helpers that find words from letter in place I already have but I did use it for 24A today.

Re `set` I didn't know that. How appropriate for setters.

Thanks for having me.

Hi All, enjoyed this more than last week's! Can I have a hint for 23a - is it definitely a word for communicate? So far I have _N_A_R but not sure how Her Majesty fits unless I have gone wrong. Thanks.
