You don't need to have been to Scunthorpe either, "initially" is what you need from that clue.

That's interesting Roof, I've just looked it up and apparently the name was changed because the original "sounded too German"!

5a - Is an anagram - "version" is the ndicator - definition is "very well"

12d - 8 letter "marriage" around 2 letter "such as" - definition is "being faithful".

I'll definitely watch Beck next week and I'm glad each episode is a new story.

Ah but you also asked about 1A, I'm kind of off the hook (although my hints were for 1A not 5A)

Talking of "too German" I worked for a few years in Germany and one day in the canteen they were offering "Beef Citizens" as the days special, lol.

1a defn is "austere place", hint historical. You might be able to guess it from the crossers w/o knowing 18.

Hi PS

I got 13/18 and parsed it following hints in this long thread. And now I've got 1ac. It wasn't one of my possible words 'cos it's a place!

I'm impressed I got 5ac without realising it's an anagram.

I've now got an answer to 6d, but I can't parse it so I'm not sure it's right. Just the SW corner now to do, which is largely blank.

I'm off to do some chores (putting today's rasperrys and loganberrys in the freezer and doing the washing up), but I'll be back for more hints on 16d, 23ac. 25ac and 21d.

Thanks everybody

16D and 20A were the first ones I got in the SW corner. 16D isn't too difficult, "not a" should help?

20A is easy if you google famous philosophers.

25A "sides" = extremities should be helpful

I'd actually heard of this philosopher from his "5 red apples" :-)
