...but why the last 4 letters?

When tracing your family tree you might refer to your "family ????" - hence for the dinosaurs, their ???? would be D???

The last four letters in 17a are as in ‘lineage’ or ‘descendants’ when it comes to the second meaning. I queried it my first post but I had missed the subtlety.
I also queried 12a but I missed the parsing totally, which I thought was a double defn but of course it’s far cleverer than that!

I went and did the washing up and groaned when it came to me. And smiled. When i logged back in I saw that others were still here. Thanks to all.

Many thanks Philistine - a perfect middle ground between the excesses of the last few weeks. FOI 11a, LOI 19d (got very confused so put this one aside for a long time), thanks for the pointers I got from here. Too many COD contenders to count but some very nice clueing.
I'm sure I've seen 9a in a Guardian crossword, no doubt Jono can't tell us when it was. Liked the Pauline 13a/18a; I thought we might have a marital theme emerging with 12d and 24a, but nothing else came through.

I've previously seen 9 in a cryptic crossword, but can't recall which newspaper.

Hi Luko, last time I can see 9a in the Guardian would be Nutmeg 26,327 from March 2014. You have a good memory!
