I have solved all the clues, found the response and the shape. I can see that removing the shape would leave real words, but to comply with the preamble, I presume that we have do do something with the non-words at, for example, 7 across. Is that correct?

It is indeed correct. It should become clear when you move the shape...

I'm with fgsitw (post 35). I'm sure it's a great puzzle and worth persevering but I am horribly stuck, having completed the NW corner.

Is 46 across a word meaning the common people? If so what is the misprint in the definition. On 25 down I quickly found an 8 letter word meaning prisoner but if the fourth letter of 46a is L then I am wrong. Please help me on the upset poet.

A hint on 7 across would also be welcome and provide me with the stimulus to continue.

I'd like to stay with it so many thanks

Hi Williamseal,

I would really recommend sticking with this puzzle, it's as good as they get:-)

46a - There is an L but its the first letter - an old word for shines.

7a - alternate letters of "senior" then 4 letter "checks" - definition is "gun perhaps" and it's jumbled.

Late again this week as been camping with my daughter.

But have to echo the chorus of approval here - what an incredible piece of setting and would be surprised to see this being beaten this year in the running for best crossword.

I wish other setters would use a similar approach when using jumbles as makes it more approachable. That said there was still plenty of tough cluing to unpick.

Thanks Android - great stuff.

Really enjoyed it so far and have spotted most of the endgame. I’m assuming 33d begins with M but not seeing the first part of the parsing.

Hi Rickye,

2 letter "Android's" (yes, begins with M) + 5 letter "plot" with the "gone ultimately" swapped for "nothing" - answer is a common word but in a million years I wouldn't have guessed it's an old word for "?ocation" with the first letter corrected.
