Pootle

46a is in chambers - defn is first two words (with misprint) - look up mutton

49a defn is first 4 words with misprint

Pootle - further, check your "spelling" of 25d - I think I know what you have done as I did the same!

Thanks andyp. My problem was not recognising the less usual poetic spelling of even.

Hi Pootle, I initially did the exact same thing - it caused all sorts of problems with 46a and 49a.

One of my favorite touches is that the character has an eye!

Very enjoyable, some of the new words created by the move looked a bit unlikely (like the Scots oil) but they're all real!

I thought a night's sleep and early start would help but have only entered about three answers in last hour, so am back begging for some leads!
16a, assume is a jumble, definition 'checking' but can't complete it.
27a, Another jumble? But can't see definiton or structure despite having several letters.
43a, have three out of five but still baffled.
38d, same, can't see first two letters or what type of clue.
32a, have first three letters and guess a jumble again?
48a, does entry simply start NG?

Hi lumen, 16 yes, 27 yes, tho I haven't fully parsed it, 43 misprint clue, it "sounds like" a word for shed, 38 misprint clue, urge is 2 and expert is 3, 32 soft = p in a word for priest minus its frst and last letters, 48 yes. Hope that helps!

The parsing of 27 is: single letter abbreviation for hot + two-letter abbreviation for soldiers + IN (on the spot) + three-letter word for "vexed" (think Gilbert Grape but in past tense!). Not the most obvious parsing there's ever been!

Thanks both, got all those now. So pretty much complete on three-quarters, only the SE to do.
Except 26d which now looks even more like a common word meaning supplies, but that doesn't work as all definitions have a misprint?
