I have most of the top half, but have ground to a halt, can someone help with 23a? That would be really useful to move into the lower section. I'm thinking maybe rapture is involved.

It's one of the jumbled entries. Def is rupture, wordplay HA' (short form of have) in a 4-letter word for check (as in restrain)

gitto - I think you are mistaken...the character is not highlighted until it reaches it's resting place.

I liked how the initial grid provided the initial means of egress for the character:-)

I think "then" in the preamble suggests buzzb is right. Am I right in assuming the resting place is a single word ?
