What a fab puzzle this one is. One clue is niggling, and if anyone can point my brain in the right direction it’d be appreciated: 17d, spreads vegetation. Before the reshuffle I just don’t see how the word mines precisely up with a definition in BRB. After the reshuffle, I can’t even see that it’s a “real word or phrase”.

Chambers gives the definition as "to cover with (green or) verdure" and gives "verdure" as "green vegetation".
