Could someone explain the wordplay for 37 across please.

A smock is an old-fashioned word for a girl. Reverse it minus the final letter, and bear in mind there's an unaccounted for letter in the wordplay.

The interchanging of the words, leaving real words is very clever. The final step of adding the missing letter reminds me of Awinger’s last Listener submission which involved goal posts. I got that one wrong because I didn’t include the ball too!

I have one parsing query left and that’s 40d. I’d be very grateful if someone could put me out of my misery on that. Thanks

It's an anagram of LAIRD PUT with the letters (jumbled) of TRIP removed.

Thanks loge. Those ones often ‘trip’ me up! But I should’ve got it given there was another example of this technique in the clues.
