An odd one, this, in that I have a filled grid, with my replacements all working properly, and I think I get what's happening in word B (though I have it as two words). Word A I cannot see as a single word or how the four six letter words in the grid are examples except extremely tangentially.
So either my missing wordplay letters are wrong, or I'm just not seeing something obvious.
One of my missing letters could be one of three letters, Chambers giving alternate spellings for the word. All three letters create words that sort of work, but not so it makes much sense or one recognisable A word.
I'm not that worried: the grid fill works anyway and the letter in the blank space is fine. But it would be nice to know.

The word lengths are 7 and 8. The 7 letter word describes the 4 words quite well.

Indeed Buddy, though I can think of some 4-letter words that would describe one of them even better (won’t say which) 😉

Nice puzzle, though it seems a strange time to have this theme. Much more my cup of Earl Grey than all that Bletchley Park stuff!

Ok it took some time to realise the preamble was actually correct, I.e read in grid order, not clue order.
Otherwise we were looking at France! Doh!
Might have concluded the puzzle was a 32 dn.
Agree with Loge about the relevant words to describe the 6 letter elements.

Nice one Awinger, thank you

Yes, got it when I read the instructions the way they are supposed to be read. And resolved a couple of ambiguities, including that three possible letter word. And loge, round here the subject crops up next Thursday, so the timing is apposite.

When I read the preamble I feared what the end game had in store but it turned out to be pretty straightforward (for a change). Quite a neat little puzzle with a reasonable mix of clues - all fair, some easy and others not so easy. The final transpositions are quite clever in their construction of the grid.

All done now, including understanding the title, with thanks to Simplesimon for putting me right about the extra letters- it saved me having to find 24 different ones!

I still don't get the word play for 6d - tips, please?
