Hi Brassmonkey,

6a - 3 letter word for "gang" repeated and reversed - definition is "stones"

16a - 5 letter "shields" (maybe a face covering?) with R(adium) replacing E(nergy) - definition is "electrofluids supplying power"

8d - 2 letter "well" + L(oved) + missing letter - definition is "Female alone"

9d - last 3 letters of a 6 letter "pictures" + 3 letter "that's scary" - definition is "missing"

Greetings again from a very wet sandbank. I'm quite enjoying this so would like to battle on if someone could give me a nudge.

I can't parse 49 across but guess the surplus letter is n. If so so that gives me a nine letter word for B which reminds me or the box I give Mrs Seal at Christmas.

The first word "A' is however eluding me. In order I have spare letters in 4 down, 8 down, 10 down 12 down 3 down and 5 down. I've been looking for a spare 'I' and can't find one. Obviously I'm wrong somewhere. Any help most welcome.

Despite Brendan's clues above I still have a lot of gaps in the two left. For 6A I have the TE_ _ _ S so if it's a three letter word repeated backwards I know what it should be but can't find that word to mean Stones in Chambers?

Have you looked up "Stones" in Chambers. What you want is the 8th listed noun in my version

Thanks, I was looking up the solution word rather than the definition word.

In 49 across the unchecked penultimate letter is spare and, leaving it out, you have two 3-letter words which are defined by "roughly" and "snatch" written backwards and, when the N is added, you get your "Indian jackets".

Your instinct to look for a spare letter I further up the grid is right. It is the final letter of 27 across.
