Of course it may be that the second letter of 18 is an o, as some have suggested. It is given as an alternative spelling of the flower and would mean that the final entry is defined (though final entries of 14 and 19 don't seem to be ....) If that were so, it wouldn't be a plural taken out ... and I'd miss out on the prize for the 214th time.

buddy, 18a does not require a plural to be removed. The masculine singular of the word you are probably thinking of works just as well.

Sorry, I just realised that I was having a senior moment in my last post... What I should have said was 'The two-letter general term for the second word of 8 that you are probably thinking of works just as well.'

Very helpful info here re. 19 and 4, thanks all;.

True to form, I typed up a question about 4d here and then the penny dropped (although I've seen the tap used in UK English too). However:

I'm still stuck on 11a ( ? A ? E : no idea on either front) - I read the tips here earlier but am none the wiser.
