Despite dsc's post at #38 I still can't solve 27 across. It would greatly help with the crossers 5,6,14 down. Any more obvious hints are welcome!

2 letter note reversed followed by obscure 3 letter instrument.

gazzar-- reverse a 2 letter note ( to follow sew ... think Sound of Music) and add an Arab instrument to maks a common 5 letter word meaning audibly.

I have a full grid and have linked all the extra words to the scenes (except the extra word in 2 down). A dumb question: am I right in saying that there is no 'scene' across rows 2 and 10? I see those rows don't include the character's head or foot on the asterisked cell.

Yes, you are correct. There are only 8 “scenes.” These plus the surname make 9 thematic items in the rows.
