Hi Turast, I too seem to have finished this crossword with absolutely no reference to the alphanumeric tomfoolery. Maybe we both just got lucky?

I’ve filled the grid, but can someone please help me with 23a? I have all the letters in place but can’t work out the unjumbled solution.

Alas, my curiosity has got the better of me. I definitely want to avoid the alphanumeric SHENANIGANS, but I'd like to know exactly what the source is, if it isn't the fertile mind of WH. Can somebody walk me through a couple so that I can work it out for myself, against my better judgement. Or, better still, just tell me, as the source is not part of the grid completion or the entry. Does it end in MUSEUM?

just list a few of the eight thematic words in a google search and it will pop up immediately

Had lots of cold solved answers but no idea how to enter them. Various “if I put that letter there then maybe that there” combinations of crossing solutions. Beginning to think I was defeated. And then the pdm (also the “why didn’t you think of that long ago?” moment) and it all fell into place. Very clever! Thank you, Gnomish.

Replying to turast's post from ages ago. I would never have cracked this fab puzzle without the source reference provided by the alphanumeric instruction of the preamble, even though the theme is very familiar to me. My thanks to Gnomish.

I'm with you, bobbycollins. That's what did it for me too. Then I went and made it way harder than it needed to be before I realized that some of the "scenes" would cross grid lines.
