All done, and quickly too, but what does it all mean? I can't see any pattern in the highlighting

Correct, purely random (which is necessary).

Google the first word of the added letters to find out why.

I started this at full pace but slowed dramatically for the final third. Can't make any sense of what I have for the last word of the instruction - I am assuming that it is six letters. I have ALGRE? and can't fathom the final extra letter of the puzzle.

Ken - you are correct so far. Think of this as two words. For the first, the periodic table may help, but it is also a crucial part of the whole puzzle. The second is also intimately related to a particular instruction for the end game.

Thank you eugenefraxby. That should have slapped me in the face from the thematic eleven. Another big DOH moment for yours truly! Didn't help myself by assuming that 5 across belonged to the eleven, when it clearly couldn't.

Funnily enough I made exactly the same mistake with 5a!

Rather improbably, aa is a volcanic rock and gives the extra letter.
