I thought I had it done but I'm now a bit stuck with the 3rd title. I was certain I could see it , 8-2-6, but I don't see how the 2 is done. I'm sure the grid entries are correct, how do you amend the grid ? I'm new(ish) to this.

Hi Brassmonkey,

You need to view the second 2 letter word as an instruction as to what to do with the 3rd word.

I had a feeling that what you are suggesting would be it, just seems a rum thing to do to an answer, not used to these type of puzzles, but I'm getting there.

I know what you mean, it's why I always write the grid with pencil to start off with - you never know what the endgame will entail:-)

Really enjoyed this one: slow start, but soon accelerated and got there eventually. Still struggling to parse 18 “Pope stays in for old salt”: I’ve got the answer, and see how it fits the definition (last two words), I can see how the first word can be changed, but I just don’t see how “stays in” means inserting AT — any pointers welcome!

I interpreted stays = at, and in for the insertion. May be wrong though.

I think 'stay' can mean 'to hold' and 'at' is given (quite early on) in the Chambers entry for 'in'.
