I hate to use the examiners’ ‘read the question’ cliché, but the instruction is ‘expand the colouring slightly’.

*Surely* this means adding four equal segments in the same colour, as shaving off corners isn’t expanding.

Probably not the key question of our times though.

All done I think but I’ve guessed at 8 down. Can someone explain it for me please?

Apologies for hogging the bandwidth, everyone.

From Chambers (6th definition):

Noun:

Tissue: Paper coated with gelatine and pigment (photography)

Altered letter in instruction (first word of clue) is ‘h’.

HW7, I agree that having 10d begin with "Six" instead of "6" caused some trouble. Took me awhile for the light bulb to go on. I suppose the convention that in writing one never begins a sentence with a numeral took precedence over crossword convention.

I have only one small section of the grid unfilled. Unfortunately, it is the lower right corner where all the action is in the endgame. Any very light hints toward filling that section?

Exactly.

Perhaps put it down to house style; The Times will usually steer clear, whereas The Independent or Guardian will have four to six cross-referring numerals on a typical thematic.

Mathprofrockstar - yes some of the end game action is there but all 4 qurters are involved at some point. Difficult to give hints without specific clues, or giving too much away, but presumably you have a name from the missing letters in the upper across clues. You need a word to describe him in a square of four cells as per the preamble. Can you see anywhere that might fit?

Thanks, smithsax. I had gotten that far, but I still can't figure a few of the entries. I know the subject, and I found the punny description in the grid.

Oh, now I see I had made one mistake. I think I have it now. Thanks again.
