Hi
I have read all previous, but still can't figure out 26a.
I have first three letters but can't find a suitable word in the red book....
Any hints would be appreciated.

It is not in TCD as it is a place name. British island is the definition. The first letter is omitted from the wordplay.

My thanks to mathsprofrockstar. I was not comfortable with 24d as taking off the past letter gives something that is in a cheek rather than the check itself. Also if you take off the first you get a word that appears in some slang searches. However... where on earth is this surplus K located. I only have 11 surplus letters so must be wrong somewhere.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

Thanks Malone (you are a star)

I had misread something on the thread above. I have the letters at across 5 12, 17, 18, 26 34, 35 and down 6, 8, 9, and 24.

Could anyone put me out of my misery on the one I'm missing? I've cracked the word search and the theme.

From a windy Norfolk sandbank. Shame that Saturday's AZED lunch was cancelled. I'd planned to swim round Suffolk and up the Thames.

Thanks Kirky

All done now. I do think that 24 down is a very difficult clue.

But an enjoyable puzzle, nonetheless

I notice that the solution just published has the empty cell highlighted. I think reference to the “blank” cell in the preamble is what causes the ambiguity. Chambers has one definition of blank as featureless so I would think that this could mean no letter or highlighting. Presumably the checker will allow both interpretations as correct.

By the way there are two very old books of Listener crosswords currently available on ebay.
