Thanks smithsax. Just printed it off. It looks daunting! Reading the first preamble, is there something missing after the first paragraph? It ends 'For instance, on four and on five bells:' then nothing although there is a small square immediately following which may have been something at one time.

I presume that as you have made good progress, this isn't a show-stopper and the rest of the preamble suffices?

Have stared at completed grid since Friday and cannot spot phrase: a hint appreciated!

As has been pointed out elsewhere, the sum of the thematic clue numbers is itself thematic.

Would be worth summating if you’re stuck.
