Far too easy. With a very guessable theme.

I was doing well until I came across the four 4 letter grid entries.
I have 5 of the 8 words. Hints please.

The answer may be longer and word play for grid entries.

17a. Index Eliot’s introductory letters (4)

26a. Strait east of northern British island (4

27a. Giving up standard part of stone floor (4, two wds)

7d. There’s no compromise on this cut cloth (4, two words)

Thanks.

17 is the abbreviation
26 has missing first letter
27/7 both have thematic word removed from 2 word phrase

Thanks tatters.
Got 26a once I figured out what the def is.

17a could be Stock Market related but not sure of parsing.

I am assuming that 7, 27 have thematic words removed from middle.

I had to look up 27 in TCD. Stone floor is anew meaning for me.
Now only 7, 13 remain.

I seem to have filled 80%, without discovering the thematic set!

Thanks by the way, tatters. All finished. About to put it down when I noticed that I don’t have the last letter for 26, in fact I’d not actually solved it. Can’t see what it could be so, hint please (I saw the earlier hint). Wondering if I’ve got the first 3 letters correct but the 3 Downs look pretty solid. Thanks
