I could only come up with the shading on the right being the murderer bending over the victim.

Does the "beast" in 17d goes in the RHS?

If it does, then I can get a word meaning (German) "silver" for the RHS 19a but, assuming it's correct, can anyone explain the parsing?

Yes, the beast at 17 down goes where you've put it.

You're also right with RHS 19 across. A "turn in" is what cricketers have at the crease, boring (inside) a shortened word for toilet (John). First letter unclued.

Thanks Loge, I can't see what word for toilet ends in LE though, unless it's just "male"?

Also, for the LHS side of 17d it looks like an anagram of "mother" minus 'toe' + 1 other letter, but I can't match any word with those letters to a definition - am I way off?

Re 17D LHS. I had the first 8 words as definition, then wordplay = MUMM(Y)
RHS is simply a "contained" clue.

3d RHS I have a word meaning "trial" (as in an enticement) with the first three letters "met" up/reversed but can't see how the rest comes from "comic actor" - or am I completely wrong?
