9 - it's not the name of the scientist but the letters he has after it
12 - definition Ladies + the figure + words for stripped and fools both shortened at opposite ends,
14 - abb for navy in a word for bloke with the figure replacing a (French) number. Can be either sex - setter is being PC ...

I have been doing this puzzle since Monday, on and off, But am still mystified by 2d and 9d. Please confirm that 2d ends in i, or I have been croaking up the wrong tree. Frog is very elusive, and I am beginning to go croaking mad.

Has 9d got anything to do with tanning?
