jadzia - I'm sure you should put in what you actually write in the grid - that's what always worked before, If anyone is offfering help, I am stuck on 2,8,20,21 and 23

prospero - I too am stuck on quite a few so can only help with a couple. For 2, it helped me when I Googled a part of the clue that I'd never heard of before. For 20, again Googling what I assumed must be the definition very quickly gave me the answer. Hope that helps.

8a is one of the two cases with two-letter omissions, a Shakespearean word
21 is an old word for unexpected event, with French word omitted in wordplay
23 has a French word omitted as starter

You can put either - the winner’s solutions are manually checked.

Prospero is right, I’m not on the roster for the daily (yet? Hopeful!) but you can try a puzzle of mine at http://www.alberichcrosswords.com/pages/soup2.html . I also edit 1 across magazine and there’s a puzzle from me in there a few times a year.

muraria - I'm also struggling with 23 which I still can't get despite your hint. Can I just check that 22a requires its thematic component to occupy 2 cells? It must surely. Hmmm.....?

Hi
Yes, in both 22 and 23 two cells are occupied by the omitted figuratives

I believe that's right but that gives the French substitute followed by _I_ I'd like it to be an O there but I'm sure I have 26 right. Have spent hours trying to get einsteins to fit the end of 2 - looks so perfect ...
