glad there's someone finishing later than I! 27 - the bulb when cut sounds like something under a window, then you need edges of emerald and insert a figure. 6 - weird word that means lying: wordplay is abbreviation of pair, lying with in government taken out, and a figure in the middle. Both took me ages ...

Thanks both. That was one I thought about but rejected because, unlike many others in the puzzle, the definition didn't match any of the wording in Chambers (some were identical). Didn't check the bulb part [rolls eyes]. Thanks

Is the second letter of 6d an ‘r ‘ from 8a).I got 8a but had to put in a shortened version ( by one letter ) to make it fit.

yes, second letter of 6 is r - earlier helpful post tells you 8 has 2 substitutions - so no need to shorten ...
