Thanks drxx. Have now got the quote and understand what the 'D...' word is. I'll ponder on the circled letters and clue numbers. Oh, and what 'appropriately placed in the grid' means. It looks like a meaningful shape.

Actually, if it doesn't contravene the etiquette the one letter missing from 23a could be a great help. 37a is full but all I can make of that is a brainy german (who may well have known a lot about the two operations in question).

for 23 there's an issue, and solvers have different ideas - i've gone for 'm', third from the end (but i'm going off the web, not the ref book).

Did not enjoy this, too many tenuous clues, haven't got Brewers, lengthy grid state. Generally poor. Finally finished thankfully, with half a dozen I can't fully parse but I'm done.

Have the 14 letter word but no idea on the quotation after a lengthy Google. Any suggestions how to get the quotation from the 14 letter word? Thanks.

I just looked up the 14-letter word in the index of the ODQ and it took me straight to the verse.

I haven't got ODQ, which doesn't help with this type of puzzle. I can normally get the quotation with a bit of creative googling, but no joy with this one.

Smellyharry, the next word is "is" so Google the 14-letter word + "is" and it comes up along with a few other suggestions. The third word rhymes with the first.
