I am in the same situation as lexawkward and Laertes. I have a full grid and a 14 letter word from the missing letters. However I cannot find any quote beginning with that word. Therefore I am haplessly grid staring waiting for a PDM that will not come. I don't understand the "lol" from Laertes.

if you've figured out the 14 letter word, you'll note that it's related to arithmetic, the quotation includes the opposite operation.

Gitto - I don't know if you've fallen into the same trap I did but initially the word I got was incorrect, caused by taking the wrong missing letter from 9ac. Armed with the correct letter I found the word indexed in the ODQ, the rest was then child's play. Hope this helps.

Shouldn't 2d comprise two words ?

Thanks Gabrielc and s_pugh. I had the right word, but could not find the quote until in unearthed my (very) dusty ODQ after s-pugh's nudge. I too think 2d should be two words, but I can now move on to the inquisitor and sleep soundly.

And shouldn't 23a be 8, not 7, letters?

Agreed, and strictly speaking 10d should be singular.

Given the theme, do you suppose it matters which version of 17ac we go with?

lexawkward, look at the longer name in chambers, there is only one version for the shorter familiar version.
