Thanks bananabean - I got stuck on '(m)EN(u)' and missed the bigger picture!
Still pondering my asymmetry.

Got most of the way there after a LOT of struggling. Two things still to do: find the 4-letter hidden word and alter it and - oddly - fill in 2 blanks to reveal the author. Why on earth not 3? If I am to sleep I need assistance with these final steps.

Cockie, the eight letter word is, of course, thematic and in a column and the hidden four letter word is actually antithematic as it refers to more than one person!.

Once you solve that your second problem will solve itself.
