Thanks. I only have clues 4 and 5 left to solve. Any hints?

Me too - plus a couple I can't work out the wordplay to (but they seem to fit ok).

I'm really struggling with the extra letters now - I seem to have 10, not 9 and can't see any symmetry or sense (apart from a suggestion from the top 4 letters - and knowing what to expect from this author, this is what should dictate how the grid's to be completed).
From the work in question there can only be one shape - and I'd expect it to be symmetrical.

I have the endgame and the symmetric extra 9 letters. 3 are on a diagonal and the other 6 are symmetrically disposed. You can join them and the diagonal bisects their joining lines at right angles.

4 Is a GCE exam, which didn’t exist when I was at school. 5 , jerk is the definition, truncated four-letter word for fire, and four-letter word for colt

That's worrying - it suggests I've managed to almost fill the grid in an incorrect order (because I'm pretty sure of my extras, apart from the one possibility in 'Satyrs' that I'm guessing at).

Thanks, Crucifer, but I am no wiser. Are both the L's of 6 in the same row?
