I think TonyNannini is still trying to find the description of the travellers. This comes from the clues not the grid. You need the eight letters before the missing points read in sequence of clues and the eight letters after the missing points read backwards.

Or is looking for those two words in the grid kobnut - 'grid staring' was mentioned in one of the posts.

Thank you drxx. Sorted now. Not a subject that I knew anything about, but a really well constructed puzzle.
I was a bit obtuse to say the least about the endgame , considering the speed at which I completed the grid yesterday.

10 is normal - 22 and 32 give Es.

Cockie, the e is in 18 across , tar becomes tare.

tonynannini - yes, I enjoyed the endgame too (and I had no idea about the theme before now).

... I think cockie is looking for the insert that gives E, not the E itself - but I might be wrong (again!).
