Ive a few answers dotted around really. It doesn’t look hopeful for me at all. A couple I can’t parse, one or two I know are right, but that’s it Scarlett.

I have two answers so far.

Some help on these two would help.

Some clues are missing N, E, S, W

1. Veg used by American bishop slicing each in bread rolls (8, 2 wds)

18d. Tools although square are used to slice fruit (8)

I've finished - it might help to know that all changes result in real words in the grid (and it all seems to work out unambiguously).

sunray - for 1a it's BP for 'bishop' and the bread is the Asian kind rolling back ('each' is the usual 2 letters).

...18D - 4 letters for the 'fruit' (plural) around 'although', which is a conjunction + S(quare).

Thanks drxx .
I tried three Asian breads (R, N, P) to no avail.
Need a hint on the fruit in 18d. Starting letter?

It's the N (4 letter plural) bread and everything reverses.
The fruit starts with H.

Thanks drxx.

I should have tried the plural version on N bread.
I have never seen the fruit.

Four down, millions to go.
