Orson, there are 2 empty cells, located in the middle of row 7.

orson - the 4 empty cells are in a line near to the middle of the grid (affecting 1 across answer and 2 downs).
The order of the 4 points might help - SENW (acrosses) WSEN (downs).

Thanks drxx, but I haven't found the 2 letters to change either. Also, I still don't understand how to locate the appropriate letters for the travellers. I've been grid staring all morning!

tonynannini - The preamble might be leading you to think that all of the highlighting forms a closed loop - only the name does that.
The travellers start from the named object and move out towards the corners.

Please don't be confused by my typo - there are just 2 empty cells.

Even more confused now, drxx. What do you mean by the named object?

...I found it impossible to find the initial two letters that have to be altered, because the justification for the change is something of a postscript (it's certainly not relevant at this stage of the action!).
I looked for the changes to give the 'more familiar name' instead (that is pretty obvious but it means changing 2 letters in in each of 2 entries). Once you've done that the symmetry helps with the rest.

...I think you might be looking for the name of a person - I wasted a lot of time doing the same (the name is an object).

Thank you for your valiant efforts, but I am no nearer to working out how to identify the 16 letters that indicate the travellers, or what you mean by the object. I'm still totally lost and frustrated.

The travellers combined make 24 not 16 - you need the individual names of each one (and their colours of course).
