Something that might be worthy of mention is that the formation of the name formed in cell 44 is not consistent with all the other formations .

Not sure what you mean Uncle_W.
I have a 5 letter name, the first 2 letters from the first 2 of the answer to 44, and the the last 3 letters being the last 3 of the answer of 28

I don't see any inconsistency in 44 either.

What an excellent puzzle! Challenging but fair clues. It kept me entertained for most of today.
Three PDMs for me that each arrived just as I thought I may have to give in and look at this forum. The first was guessing the theme from the title and one completed set of letters. The second was seeing the symmetry in the grid. Finally I guessed the penultimate word in the instruction with only one letter.
Without the last one I would have stuggled to find the quiet guest at the end of 43.
A couple of correct answers I have still to parse properly but will work on them rather than ask for help.
Well done Schadenfreude. A good start to 2018.

I apologise to everyone for my stupid error. Of course you are correct.
A spelling aberration !

What a diabolically clever puzzle, an endgame with no ambiguities and a brilliant title. Thanks Schadenfreude.
