Malone, I have just checked Brewer's.
Apologies to all.
I did not realise that it was coarse!

Rusty, you're responsible only for making us interested in finding the derivation of the phrase. I did enjoy learning something new, even if it was ... rather ribald!

Elle, isn't it great that we're witnessing language evolving? Your 'Dip one's...' phrase must have died a natural death as it doesn't feature in my newer edition of Brewer's.

Really, Malone?
I bought this second-hand edition relatively recently from Amazon - one of its "bargain" prices!
But this perhaps explains why I have a different explanation for "get on someone's wick" in mine?
There is no apparent "rudeness " attached to the phrase at all!

Nor in mine, yet it is not that new - Millenium edition.

I reckon they just did away with explaining the origins of the expression, which is what Rusty was curious to know.

Sorry to butt in, but just found this thread from June 2015. How soon you all forget :(

Elle, I have just "received" an email.
Amazon/World of Books has just posted off my Chambers!
Another thing that annoys me is folk who say "was like" instead of "said".

Hi, Rusty!
"The best laid plans of mice and men..........."
No, I didn't really make any inroads into writing the Christmas cards! I got them down from the top cupboard in the wardrobe
(I had to climb a ladder)... a start.... but that is about as far as it went!
A friend - one of my neighbours who only lives four doors away - popped in for coffee......and that was the rest of the morning accounted for.......
And then this afternoon, we were tempted by "a certain yellow thing in the sky" (as Ros called it) and went out for a walk - only returning when it started to go dark!
A pleasant day ..............but a basically idle one!
BTW, did you get a response from "Rose" acknowledging your letter? I didn't ?
