No more drivel from me.
I promised no more posts on here, so that is the last one now. I think it was the wine which I am not used to :(

Well, glad to see quite a discussion going, even though I missed it - watching last available series of Mr Selfridge. ~Series 4 has not reached TV yet so I reckon I shall have to wait for quite a while before it released in DVD.

On the subject of Jane Austen, I personally think that the quality of the language cannot be the same; as we have already said in a previous post, language does evolve and we do not speak the same English as was spoken in Austen's days (in her society). Now to re-write the books in modern language cannot be right because it will not be in keeping with English language spoken in those days. Another point is that Jane Austen was very humerous (particularly in Mansfield Park) and laughing at her own society - I don't know that anyone else can achieve quite the same subtil effect. Thus it will not be a Jane Austen's work anymore.

I certainly would not hate to know that anyone is attempting to rewrite any of Zola, Balsac, Proust or Hugo's works!

Yes, quite so, Pigale - I whole- heartedly agree with you!
That is exactly what I said previously in post 3595 - although most surprisingly no-one took me up on it!
I expected my remarks to start a discussion/ argument on exactly the point you've just made! At the time , it was just by-passed!
I'm glad that you think as I do! You've also enlarged on the point which is good!
I'm looking forward to reading all my (new) Jane Austen books again
!Incidentally, speaking of Jane Austen...did you ever buy that DVD about her that I was telling you about? If my memory is correct, it was called "becoming Jane"?

hi all
I have to admit I am not a fan of Jane Austen but believe she was one of our best,I cannot imagine novelists.I read the other day that new Bond books were being written by Anthony Horowritz and thought why bother These modern authors must have a high opinion of their talent as writers
I cannot imagine Tracey Emin repainting Goya or Holbein

I don't know why people would want to re-write Jane's novels, either. Has anyone read P.D. James's "Return to Pemberly" or some such? A sequel is a different matter though still a bit odd I think.
I quite like William Horwood's sequels to Wind in the Willows, though they are controversial (esp when the animals die!) I think there was even a court case about them.
Good point about the paintings, Doglet. Though people do paint "in the style of" pictures, i believe. The last Christmas Cake I made was iced as a homage to Jackson Pollock. I dripped red and green lines in icing all over the white base and drove a Dinky car through. Not kidding! It was much admired and more fun to do than the usual decorations.

I have said more farewells than Sinatra, but this is now the last.
Elle, you say your comments at 3595 were "just by-passed!" Not at all....
My (failed) wine-induced humour at post 3598 was an attempt to show how a modern translation of Austen would read. So I was agreeing with you.
I do not need a response.
Have a good day all

Morning Everyone !

Jazzy, your humerous (and very well written!) comment about the Goldfish did not pass unnoticed by me - unfortunately as I said last night, I only joined the discussion later than most, because of watching a DVD.

Doglet, very good point about paintings indeed - Am I mistaken or was there a very talented faussaire (copyist)
who painted many master pieces from various artists, all extremely well done and following exactly the technique of said artist ? He never signed the works, but he still ended up in prison where he was allowed to paint (I think) - There was a British TV series where he explained all about the paint mixes etc... dealing with one painter each week. Cannot remember his name!

Elle, it is not the first time you and I agree on questions of language ! I had seen your comment too.

And (though I should not start a sentence with 'and'!), extending the topic a little more, can anyone imagine a musician composing the works of Beethoven, Motzart, Schubert, Smetana, Korsakov etc etc etc....
Amsing thought !

Now for my daily weather report : Sunny, a bit fresh first thing but promising day.

BTW Doglet, with our one hour difference with you, it gets dark a little earlier than you, but we still have light early in morning - around 6.30 I think.

Sorry about long post !

Hi pigale
Do you mean Tom Keating? He was jailed because his paintings were fakes they were not just in the style of,I dont know if he had his own style. There have been a lot of pictures just recently that have been copies much to the horror of the owners and auction houses.I am going to an art exhibition of wildlife and animal paintings but have promised my husband I wont buy anything,I know we have too many already but I bought a lino cut this year and discovered the painter was quite well known and his art works fetch quite a lot so my husband was mollified by my modest purchase.Weather cool but dry at least for the moment
