Chris If you get the chance to read William Horwood's "Skallagrigg", I guarantee you'll enjoy it.

Here's the other thing I said I'd do.

Roy had presented a very fine bottle that evening, fearing that it might be for the last time. I was afraid for him ; in this mood he could do himself harm. We left the combination room for one of the walks that could last all night, passing old Arthur Brown on the way to his lodgings.
"I'm not prepared to ignore the possibility of or losing his war" Roy said as we passed the ancient walls of another college. He suddenly stopped talking and stood completely still. A woman's voice floated out of an open window over the smell of jasmine and acacia. We would recognise that dying fall anywhere; Rosalind.

When I started on this I forgot the lady in question was called Rosalind!

Somebody mentioned "Strangers and Brothers" earlier - is that "The light and the dark", Rosalind?

btw when I read it the first book was called "Strangers and brothers"; it has been renamed "George Passant" (rather prosaically).

I look out for Skallagrigg.

I feel a right ignorant at present ! I did read quite a number of English 'classic' novels over the years, but know none of the ones you mentioned, apart from Rebecca and Wuthering Heights of course.

Have no idea about contemporary British writers.

It's my pastiche on C.P.Snow chris. Probably reads like I lifted it, though I didn't. Don't think it's any good, it's just that I said I'd do it, so I did.

I agree about the change of title of the first book in the series, odd.

You have a great treat in store - hope Skallagrigg was a reasonable price. My hardback edition was £50! -must remember to get it signed.

A long time since I read it, but it sounded convincing, rosalind.
