Jazzgirl, could you explain how the doorbell works, please?
That may be an idea to ponder!

Hey, Rusty!
We've been out for a walk. I think we have just managed to beat the rain by the look of the black sky!
I think a letterbox with a knocker sounds like a marvellous idea, if you want to keep the door 'furniture' to a minimum? but a somewhat imposing separate knocker might be smart? See what your joiner thinks?
I like haddock!
Now, the Times crossword clue... you are going to be very proud of me as, yes, I have got it!
Passchendaele =battle (definition)
anagram of 'h lands escapee'
I'm amused by everyone not understanding the 'North London' clue!!
(I don't think we should tell them , do you?)

P.S. just seen Jazzy has got it - well done JG!
And Rusty ,we've got a bell on the outside wall too. I don't know why I didn't think to mention that before... might solve your dilemma?

rusty: here is a link to wireless doorbells . I think screwfix sells them.
Mind is Friedland. Brass bell on outside of house (works in all weathers)
There is a plug-in box which I can plug into any socket in the house and the doorbell will chime in that particular room. If I am in the conservatory (long way from the front door) the bell will chime there if I am out there reading etc

Well done, Elle!
I thought you would get it!
Jazzgirl gets everything!
This is this week's annoying (for me) clue.
22d Cockney's to take in the air noisily- it makes a long sound (5)
I got it, not quickly, though.

I think I'll leave the knocker/bell thing to the joiner.
I have a haddock to concentrate on tomorrow.

Box on the left (about 4 inches high) plugs into any socket. Brass bell push on the right.
You will not regret having one :)

Thank you, Jazzgirl!
That is very useful.
I like Screwfix as a company.
Can the volume be muted or turned off at night, say?

I've just got the cockney one. Very good
re: the doorbell, there's a choice of tunes.
No volume control. You could always unplug the box from the socket at night, which would stop the bell from chiming.

...or just switch it off at the socket, but don't forget to switch it on again in the morning.
