Hello, Malone!
I shall investigate that book.
I know Inspector Trench lost his job due to the Oscar Slater case.
And he was correct in his assertions that Slater was innocent!
In the case of Miss Jean Milne the Chief Constable was determined to get Charles Warner to the gallows.
Another innocent man!

Rusty, this thread is doing that strange thing again - odd numbering and the last post isn't available to read! I have no idea what you wrote, but am writing this to see if it bumps things done, enabling me to see your contribution.

Hello, Malone!
It does that when the post is ending in a "zero/0".
It is a blooming nuisance.
If you "edit" your preferences to "newest posts first" all will be revealed.
I prefer "oldest posts first".

Good morning, Rusty!
A dull but dry day here, a very humid atmosphere, 23C now, a high of 25C later.
But we are forecast rain for two hours from 3 to 5pm!
If it also rains in Wimbledon, though, they will be able to put up the roofs...... a lot of today's action will be on Centre Court and Court No1 with the Men's Quarter Finals.
I am looking forward to that!
Now...your book!
What a shame that you found the end so disappointing!
From reading the synopsis, I myself was interested to hear how the story finished.....
The writer of the blurb did say that a plausible ending was offered......was that not so?
Hmm...... I wonder what the legal situation is?
If aspersions are cast on the character of the sergeant in putting him forward as the murderer, could this be regarded as a legal defamation of character by his descendants?
( It was of course a very long time ago. I don't know whether that would be a factor?)
It would be interesting to know?

Hello, Malone!
I don't have any problems with the posts, as I have my settings on "newest post first".
If you go to "Edit" after your name , you can adjust the forum settings.
The big advantage of having "newest post first" is that you don't have to scroll to find the latest "action"!
This is particularly beneficial if it is a long thread.

Rusty and Elle, thanks for the site information. I've got the same setting as Rusty, 'oldest posts first' and quite like it that way. I don't do a lot of scrolling, I just head straight to the 'last' part. This is really just because I'm a creature of habit - if things are (ordinarily) fine, I'll stick with them.

Rusty, I remember now that odd thing with the numbering. It's a mystery as to why that happens, but I won't lose any sleep over it.

There's a huge amount of Oscar Slater stuff, it seemed to capture interest and attention from many people.

Elle, you mentioned the Wimbledon fines. I agree with most of them, but found the Serena one slightly odd - it seemed excessively punitive. As far as I know, Serena bashed one bit of the grass with her racquet, presumably because she was annoyed with herself, yet she's been fined a lot more than other offenders.

Malone...... yes, I can understand your sticking with what is familiar to you!
I opted for "newest post first" right at the beginning, so I am well used to that method.

Good afternoon, Elle!
It is quite a fresh day here!
I would imagine the book's publisher had their legal people check out the accusation of the sergeant.
And would it come under Scots Law, only, when the book was distributed in other countries?
I don't know if there would be a time limit on any action.
One of the things I found intriguing was that at the time, Broughty Ferry had less than ten policemen, and one of those was the Chief Constable!
The majority of the book was good, and quite a bit of humour in it, but the ending let it down.
It was interesting for me, for I know all the streets and places in the town, like shops and hotels, that were mentioned.

Hello, Malone!
Like you, I prefer the "oldest" first, with me being a bit thrawn in my ways!
There is lots out there on Oscar Slater.
I suppose, in a way, he was fortunate, being reprieved from execution.
I wonder what Conan Doyle thought of the case?
He seems to have got himself involved in several controversies.
"The Cottingley Fairies", was one, and he fell out with Houdini over Spiritualism, which Houdini debunked.

Good afternoon, Rusty!
We have sunshine now... a nicer afternoon than it was morning.
But I am indoors watching the tennis!
I can "take my eye off the ball" for a few minutes, though, as Novak is already two sets up in his match against David Goffin.
There is better tennis being played than the scores would indicate, but so far Novak has it all under control.......
I hope to fit in a dog walk...but when?!
( I shall explain the situation to the dog.......!)
I expect you are watching the cycling?
How is it going?
