Hi, Rusty!
I'm sorry...I don't understand "top gear" for 18d?

Hello, Elle!
"G" for good. "Ear" for hearing.
Beethoven's fourth is "t", opus is "op".
Fifth could be the top gear in a car.

Hi, Rusty!
Goodness, am I dim or what?
Thank you......yes, I see it now!
I have done a few jobs whilst "crosswording"....... all in all, I have had a profitable morning.
It is too hot for gardening.....I don't "do" heat, as my daughter would say!
I am surprised that it as hot as this.........the forecast is way off beam!
I doubt we shall do any more walking...it is too hot for me.... let alone the dog!
When there is a bit more shade, I may sit out and read!

Hello, Elle!
You are not dim!
It was a clue that had to be broken down bit by bit, is all.
Quite a good one!
I'm with your daughter.
I do not "do" heat either!

Hi, Rusty!
What are you up to?
I have been driven back indoors......this is far too hot for me.
The local forecast is still saying 21C.......well, I don't know where the guy is standing while he decides this ........but it certainly feels far hotter than that !!
My husband has fallen asleep...... as has the dog and the cat - only the goldfish and I are awake to commune with each other......
Are you watching the horse racing?
Any bets placed?

Hello, Elle!
You are best inside away from the heat.
It is not like that here!
Yes, I backed Saxon Warrior in the 2,000 Guineas.
And I may have a wee bet on Mendelssohn in the Kentucky Derby.
It's a bit late though, at 11.50 tonight.
The Kentucky Derby is known as "the Run for the Roses".
I may have told you this before?
Been watching the cycling most of the afternoon.
And had a mackerel for my tea!

Hi, Rusty!
Yes, I remained indoors for a time, whilst the sun blazed down.... the garden is now mainly in shade, which is far pleasanter!
You did well to back the winner of the 2000 Guineas!
I know that you usually only place a small bet, but, money regardless, it must have given you a thrill when Saxon Warrior won?
Yes, you have told me about the garland of roses placed over the winning horse in the Kentucky Derby.
I think "The Run for the Roses" is a most romantic name!
Will you stay up to watch?
Was it your walk down Memory Lane earlier that prompted you to have mackerel for tea?
( Shades of your youth-hostelling days!)
We had Shepherd's Pie.

Hello, Elle!
Yes, Saxon Warrior ran well.
He is a huge horse!
Grown a lot since last year.
My plan is to watch the Kentucky Derby live.
Unfortunately, Paddy P is not taking bets on the race for "legal reasons".
I do not know why that should be.
He is taking bets at other American tracks tonight.
Santa Anita, Gulfstream, Woodbine, Tampa Bay, etc, but not at Churchill Downs.
Beats me!
I have mackerel several times a week.
That and trout are my favourite fish!

Hi, Rusty!
That is rather a shame that you cannot place a bet with Paddy P for "The Run for the Roses"...it would spice things up!
Do you know that eating mackerel is very good for you?
Oily fish help against cardiovascular disease, prostate cancer , dementia and age related losses of vision.
It contains a lot of omega- 3 fatty acids, which is good for us.
I like smoked mackerel the best.
It is nearly time for BGT....
I shall try to watch tonight as tomorrow might be busy.
I have set the recorder though, just as a precaution!
(I might go to sleep......or someone might telephone!)

Hello, Elle!
Not to worry about my bet!
I have read that oily fish is good for me.
And lentils.
I rarely eat meat, except for a bacon roll.
Think my diet is reasonably good.
Hope BGT is good.
I'll watch it in the morning.
