You know why, but this is Sondheim's explanation :
(quote)

""The "clowns" in the title do not refer to circus clowns, but symbolize fools.
I wanted to use theatrical imagery in the song, because she's an actress, but it's not supposed to be a circus It's a theater reference meaning "if the show isn't going well, let's send in the clowns"; in other words, "let's do the jokes." I always want to know, when I'm writing a song, what the end is going to be, so "Send in the Clowns" didn't settle in until I got the notion, "Don't bother, they're here", which means that "We are the fools.""
The song could have been called "Send in the Fools". I knew I was writing a song in which Desirée is saying, "aren't we foolish" or "aren't we fools?" Well, a synonym for fools is clowns, but "Send in the Fools" doesn't have the same ring to it ""

Is this the origin ? Or is Shakespeare involved ?

Well, "send in the clowns" is a reference to Shakespeare's tragedies. Whenever the plot became too intense, he brought in a comic character to lighten things up. (The drunken porter in MACBETH and the gravegiggers in HAMLET, are just a few). From there, the plot became even more intens

Hi, Rusty!
Well, we have some of the white stuff here!
It was not supposed to reach us until Thursday.
I am doubting it will last.....but it looks relatively seriously -intentioned at the moment.....
We were lightly covered all in white by the end of our walk.
How is it at your end?

Good morning, Elle!
I see there is snow down your way today!
No snow here yet, but it is helluva cold!
I did spot a couple of cars with snow on the roofs, so it is snowing not too far away.
Nothing on the hills just up the road from me.
I went to ASDA earlier and guess what?
I bought British Jazzy Potatoes!
Has Jazzgirl become a farmer, I wonder!

Hello Elle and Rusty!

It looks like we are going to escape all snow, except some parts
towards the extreme East - but temps as low as minus 10C are
forecast close to here! In fact the night was very cold but
we now have a blue sky with bright sunshine and not a single
cloud!

Take great care when you go out!

Hi, Rusty!
You are fortunate in so far escaping the snow......
Sally was in the park this morning.....she has come up to London to put her previous house on the market.
She says that she left snow behind in Aberfeldy......so perhaps your snow- covered cars had travelled from that direction?
I think it is further west than you?
(Me and Geography....)
We should have the Thames Water official arriving at noon...providing my husband has the correct date this time!
I now have a list of queries......it will be interesting to see if I receive any satisfactory answers.......
Have you heard from your son?

Good morning, Pigale!
I am glad you are probably going to escape the snow!
At the moment it is very pretty........
Picturesque like a Christmas card!
Er..... who says I am going out?
I shall hibernate till it all over......
I hate it when it freezes!

Hello, jazzgirl.
I'll let you know in a day or two.
I am using them with beef sausages in my slow cooker to make a "winter warmer" casserole sort of thing.
I think they may be an ASDA own brand according to the labelling.
The certainly look fine!

Hello rusty
That sounds delicious and a lot better than my
"if it's in the fridge" meal today.
I am off out for a while.

Good morning, Pigale!
I hope you miss the snow!
I always remember my father telling me, that the worst snow he had experienced, was in 1947, and the snow did not come until March!
