In markets apples were traditionally stacked in neat piles to stop them rolling away. If you take one from the heap, you upset the whole lot. Apples everywhere. So a small change might have big repercussions. It apparently also has a meaning from wrestllng.

If you change one basic assumption about life, the universe and everything, the whole way we look at things may change.

Hi, Rusty!
Brewers has a much more innocuous explanation of "To upset the apple cart"!
It says - and I quote .........
"To spoil carefully made plans or arrangements.
The imagery is of the overturning of a farmer's laboriously loaded cartful of apples.
The phrase is recorded in use as early as 1788.
Shaw's play "The Apple Cart" (1930) turns on the phrase."
So there we are!
It is a phrase we can safely use, after all!
I have been having fun!
First, I watched Novak win his match......then I watched my recorded Lausanne DL ......I saw Laura again!
And Van Niekerk broke Michael Johnson's 200m record.
And now Roger is playing..........
I am even having to record "The Voice Kids" which has just started........
Priorities - right?

Hello, Pigale!
My dog shares your concerns about thunderstorms!
She is absolutely terrified - and insists on sleeping with us should one occur during the night!

Rosalind, your explanation makes good sense.
Not heard of the wrestling connection though.

Hello, Pigale!
Just read a report on Lilian Calmejane.
When he was a boy growing up, Thomas Voeckler was his great hero!
Now they are both in the same team.
I hope to see one of Voeckler's famed breakaway attempts before he finishes!

Hello, Elle,
Yes, your "apples" makes good sense, too.
I thought that lad I met on YouTube was bonkers!
It is warmer here this evening.

Hello Rusty,

A belated reply to your post!
So how old is Voeckler then? I read that Lilian was born in 1992.

He was good to hang on until the end - did you see he was
stretching his leg? he was suffering from cramp, then he picked
up speed again.

I too read that this is supposed to be Thomas' last Tour this year.
So yes, it would be great to see him on one of his famous breakaways,
together with some funny facial expressions!

Hi rusty

I think the wrestling connecton had as much validity as the religious one!

Do you remember Giant Haystacks and Big Daddy?

Hello, Pigale,
Voeckler is 38, born in Alsace, in1979.
Yes, the cramp is an awful pain.
Lilian could have fallen off!
But he rode well.
More mountains tomorrow, including Grand Colombier and Mont du Chat.
Will Fabio Aru attack?
He is climbing much better since he had a nose operation which improved his breathing.
Yes, be great to see Voeckler going away on his own, and as you say, with all his facial expressions!
The Tour would not be the same without Thomas Voeckler!

Hello, Rosalind,
Yes, I remember them.
Especially Big Daddy (Shirley Crabtree).
That was back in wrestling's golden era.
He was the only man I have heard of called "Shirley"?

I would guess that having a name like Shirley meant he had to be good at fighting!

John Wayne's name was Marion! And J Marion Sims, known as the father of gynecology (being American) apparently called his first child Merry Christmas Sims. Enough already!
