Hi, Rusty!
I'd already put together "Mahler" for the answer to 3d, so could then see the connection with "barman"!
Yes, it was a good one, wasn't it?
A clever and unusual definition!
But I haven't been able to do 27a?
So far, I have M?T?L?O??
I cannot do 16d either, which would give me the last letter?
For that, I have A?E?T?U??
My mind is a blank!
These are the only ones I have left to do.
And all others parsed, so a good day for me!
A Granny Smith apple - green, crisp and tarty - with a hunk of cheddar cheese, plus an Americano coffee?
Delicious!
Yes, we shall have pancakes (with lemon) for dinner!
I am just away to the park with the dog!
Back in a bit!

Good afternoon, Elle!
Barman/Mahler was good!
I can not recall "barman" for a composer before.
16d I am not entirely chuffed with this one meaning "terrified" but it may to.

Good afternoon, Elle!
Barman/Mahler was good!

16d I am not entirely chuffed with this one meaning "terrified" but it may do.
And I would be here for a while before I made the "heading" link with the part of the answer it gives!
But it is a definite "heading" that was used on the Shipping Forecast, for instance, in that sense!
A little clue! When the Americans took on Iraaq, they said it would be, "shock and ???"
I think Granny Smith was an Aussie lady, wasn't she?
Cheddar yes, but I would not know an Americano coffee.
Told you I was a bit of a hill-billy!

Update, Elle!
You will not be surprised to learn that I am wrong again!
The Granny Smith apple originated in Australia.
However Maria Smith (Granny) had emigrated to Oz from Sussex and was an English lady!

Hi, Rusty!
We arrived home very wet and very cold!
The sunshine let us down!
We had heavy rain suddenly appear instead!
Still, fresh air and exercise is good for us (or so I tell myself!)
Is "awestruck" the answer to 16d?
It would fit the letters, but I wouldn't have said that it meant "terrified"?
More , "filled with wonder" or "feeling admiration /respect"?
And I still couldn't parse it?
I didn't know about Granny Maria Smith!
But I love the apples!
Americano coffee is basically Espresso coffee with added hot water.
I mostly drink my coffee black.
I have only become more informed about various coffee blends and types since our daughter bought us a coffee machine!
It was an excellent buy!
And speaking of buying things..........has Miss ATW spent the "house-warming" voucher you gave her?
What did she get?

Hello, Elle!
Yes, well done, it is "awestruck".
The "heading" is "West" into "a ruck".
I think "terrified" is a bit of a stretch.
Miss ATW bought window blinds for her flat with money I gave her, but unsure of what she used the vouchers for.
She is coming to see me one evening this week.
You asked the other day about the cycling enquiry.
Well, latest is, the Team Sky doctor who arranged for Wiggins "mystery parcel", will not be appearing before the Parliamentary committee because of "ill health"!
Nicole Sapstead, head of UK Anti-doping (UKAD) is scheduled to appear,
and so is the "parcel" courier, whose name has left me.
I think it is live on BBC Parliamentary Channel tomorrow.
I shall be watching!

Rusty, Elle... Chambers gives 'reverential fear; dread' for 'awe' and also mentions 'fear', so I think the clue works - just!

Thanks,Rusty - and the expert is Chambers, not me! I too initially thought 'awestruck' was an iffy answer.

Hi, Rusty!
We have had visitors!
Friends phoned to see if we were at home and popped round to see us.
A nice surprise!
Umm, not happy about "awestruck".....
So what about 27a ?
It must be "metalwork"?
m - mike
et al - and others
But how do we have "work"?
I looked in Bradford's, but cannot find any reference to "handle" meaning "work"?
That is a con about the Team Sky doctor being "ill" and unable to appear before the Committee.
Yeah right?
I shall look forward to hearing how it all goes tomorrow.
