Sorry, I misunderstood your query. It's what happens to a letter as it is processed.

Thanks to Chrise and Rocky7 I had 2d wrong. Looking up Calculus taught me something new. Haven't tried to parse it yet.

Solid grid today with a good mix of gentler and more challenging clues. LOI was 19d which maybe took me as long as the rest of the grid.

The only one I'm unsure of parsing is 10 across. Any steers would be appreciated

10 parses as 2 (abbr. for "nurse"), 4 ("patient" noun)

Hi everybody

Grandson visiting today so unable to start until after 4.00pm and then interuptions to admire our new cat and get the washing in. I was doing quite well but thought I'd better check the forum for inspiration. I did get 19d quite quickly, though I hadn't been sure about my answer for 26ac until then.

I'll go back and work through again and see how many click after looking at hints here.

Many years ago when I was doing temp jobs in college holidays I used to do a lot of work in company mail rooms. In those days you would have a franking machine that I would have to take with a company cheque (yes that's right) to be topped up so we could then do the mail. Even so I missed the clue completely.

Well I finished, though as usual there are a couple I couldn't parse completely. They are 23ac, 11ac and 22d. I think I have them right. I'd not heard of the game or the novelist either.

My FOI was 18ac, my LOI was 2d, which I only got after struggling to get 9ac. My CODs like many of you 1/15d, 5d, 6d and quite a few others.

Lots of misdirections to mislead me.

Meanwhile I have plants to pot up and some to prick out, but I'm out of room in my greenhouse. Shall I risk the forecast of temperatures below 5C this week and put some out in the garden? What a dilemma.
