Me neither Rocky but I'm guessing I have the right answer now, based on "a bit of fun" ....

I was right 1,15 and 5d were key but I fall for Tramp's brilliant misdirection every time. Not up to speed on my US novelists so 16d was my LOI. I also had the wrong first letter for 21d which meant that the very obvious 20a eluded me for longer than it should have.

FOI 3d. COD 5a for the clever misdirection.

Thanks Tramp. You had me guessing for longer than most it seems. Very enjoyable.

Nho 17a - is it US?
2d threw me for a while - I put in ETAS which is a greek letter - nearly works! Looking for the definition at the wrong end of the clue!

Yes, it's US. Google it and you will find lots of information. I had never heard of it either.

I can attest that 17 is a children's game in the USA, having often played it as a child. I was rather surprised to see it in a UK cryptic crossword.

1a 15d. Got all the crossing letters, I think but can't see it. Any subtle hints?

Hi all - can someone give a hint to how 5A works. The parsing is pretty straightforward, but I’ve never heard that word used as a synonym. Thanks

It's a perfectly valid but not obvious meaning of "frank". Partial anagram inside a word for "pull up" (in a car)
