OK, 1a 15d solved. Very clever. Had no idea about that definition of calculus. Hopefully I'm on a roll.

Thanks jono. That narrows my options for 17a, but I've never heard of the most likely one, and the first half is very loose.

Like ChrisE I am struggling with 17a and 12d to finish the grid. Following Jono's hint I thought I had 12d (although parsing not very clear) but that means 17a is a word that doesn't exist in my dictionary!!

Hi Neville
Check you have 12 right - it parses very precisely.
I wasn't impressed by 17a, but Google found it. It's American, but doesn't seem to be "children's". Perhaps there's another answer I haven't seen

Actually, reading the article more carefully, it seems it is primarily played by children.

Hi Neville,

12d - 2 letter "you shouldn't have" + 1 letter "back for sex" + 1 letter "one" + 6 letter "club"

The Chambers entry starts with “ A game played by children…”

Thank you all. I know now that I have 12d right but haven't yet found the mysterious childrens' game .... no doubt it will turn up if I continue to search!

Neville. Assuming I have the game right I personally had never heard of it.
