Hi, roof. You hit it right on the head about "Police chief." It does indeed refer to the band.

Which I should add is one of the reasons I liked this puzzle. Police Chief is a great bit of misdirection.

I really liked that one too, Rocky, along with barman.

Thanks to Brockwell for visiting forum and for a challenging prize crossword. Found it very tough but full of admiration for Brockwell’s ingenuity. Needed quite a bit of help from forum and Google.
FOI 19d. LOI 13a and a number of contenders for COD 21,20d and 2d. Now to try to list 20 themes.

I've got two clues for which I have likely solutions but don't know why, and two which I just don't know. There's an obvious word for African which fits 4d & has a spice girl in it, but I can't find anything confirming thst the bit around it is a lioness. There's an obvious word gor "leg" that fits 14d, but despite reading everything everyone has written about it, I have no idea who the star is. Contrary to what Rocky7 has said, despite having bought numerous vinyl records back in the days of my youth, I can't get 8a. I have no idea at all about 5d.

Is 3d a five letter chess word with a single letter within ? When I see Bishop the part of my brain (albeit small) responsible for synonyms freezes !
