17a slang for head is also a seed.
17d It's not so much the production of the beer as what they then do with it!
20a is a craft. The second part takes a couple of steps to get to.

I like Brockwell's puzzles. A little easier than normal for me but maybe i was on the wavelength today. There may be some obscure GK involved but they're all very gettable from the clues. I remember a lot of 20a in art classes in the 1970s and I also knew 18a but by name only. A very interesting one to pull out the bag that one. I however have no idea why 7,12 is thematic.

COD 8a as soon as I got it I knew it would take some beating. It was also my FOI. LOI was 17a.

Hi Rocky, I think 7,12 is thematic because of a recent character portrayal. Try an image search.

If you Google 7, 12 (as I had to) and look at the most famous reference, you will see why it's thematic.

Really enjoyed this crossword. Can’t quite parse 10a. And why ‘cute’ in 5d?

I can see 15 or so - 16 if both parts of 7/12 count. One has to look inside a number of words ... as you opined in your message.
