…J parses as 2,4. The short smell in P is a 3 letter word minus the last letter which gives two letters towards the end of the solution. E across is a homophone.

Last one in was S. Popped into my head whilst I was reading second book of The Wolf Hall trilogy. Checked back and parsed it. Haven't read the third book before. Looking forward to it.

Hi all

Are the E clues out of alphabetical order? i.e. the 1st E clue would come after the 2nd E clue alphabetically. (Or maybe I have the wrong answers!)

Thanks.

Good fun as always, but am I right in thinking there is a tense error in the definition for R? Should be “make”, not “made”, surely (although don’t think it’s a great definition even then). Can’t find any evidence of an adjectival meaning for the solution. Or not in Chambers anyway, but maybe there is one elsewhere…

Mdmaylwin, I had similar thoughts and concluded that the definition must be “to order” with “made” as a connecting word. Not entirely satisfactory, I agree.

What a treat! In fact two treats , Maskarade for Christmas and an alphabetical for New Year. The alphabetical took less time than the Christmas marathon apart from a delay due to having put T and R in wrong place.
Liked B and P which was my FOI , LO I was J a new word for me.
All good wishes for 2025 to everyone and thank you for your company and help throughout 2024.

Sorry to be a pain, but I am confused about the numbering of this puzzle. Paper version says 29,577, while this thread is titled 29, 578?

That confused me too iansw - no idea why. I always do the one in the paper as I need to be able to make notes, work things out in the margins etc!

Finished up last night - usually struggle with these as I'll never solve all the clues before fitting them in. On this occasion I think I just crossed the tipping point for success, along with pointers on direction of a few answers from here.

FOsolved - A
LOI - P (with help from Bradford's)

COD - I liked C
