Thank you Jono and Rocky, now you have it I feel a right chump for not getting it first time around.

I think I was following a red herring of my own imagination :)

I hope the Christmas/ New Year hiatus is a good one for all, and happy solving in 2025!

Thanks Jono.
Nice that Kite is continuing Araucaria's tradition of alphabetic crosswords, I always smile when I see one

There's one clue with 2 apparently redundant words (i.e. you don't need them to solve) which lead to the correct orientation of the whole puzzle.

I think that the unusual spelling of the T word is clued by “old”

I think it was Araucaria who first alerted me to the importance of looking for clues as to orientation where two words are interchangeable in the grid, so it’s thanks to him that I got the positioning of the 4s pretty much straight away. Kite is following an honourable tradition in that regard. I enjoyed this though it was over too quickly (perhaps just as well given that we had no online version overnight). FOsI A and Q. LOI P, which was obvious only when I had all the crossers.
COD? No real standouts for me, but perhaps P.
It will be interesting to see whether Kite will produce some tougher alphabeticals in future to match the mastery of Araucaria.

P is a plant, workers are of the six legged variety…

I enjoyed that: a steady progress, gradually fixing it together, in contrast to last week's unsatisfying obscure composers.

But I can't justify my LOI, R. There's only one word which fits, and I can see its first letter and last 4 letters, but not the overall word. Any hints, please?

It's a damp grey day up here in NW Lancs, just the day to ponder over a pleasantly doable puzzle.

Put "for example" and "uniform" between your first letter and last four, so they are "clothed" by them
