Hi Candledave

I'm trying to construct an example that confirms what you say. You must be right, but I'm struggling

Very good as always from Kea. Very happy to have got to the full 12 evenings.

2 loose ends for me. 3a I'm guessing the word play is 6,2,2 (?), but the 6 doesn't appear to be in Chambers and the 2,2 doesn't mean what it would need to as far as I can see?

8d I don't understand what Sylvan/jumper is doing - seems like the clue would work without that there?

Good Evening, smellyharry.

I had the first six letters of 3 across as "US gossiper" as a back formation from a phrase meaning to gossip. At 8 down I parsed that as a combined clue for the two entries of the solution in the BRB.

Hadn't spotted that def for 8d, thanks. Still don't like 3a.

SH for what (little) it’s worth, I took the 2,2 to state the result of the verb in the clue being read as a stage direction.

Woodlouse - 28a is an example of what I’m saying. Middle double letters are the mean but only one of them has changed

I'm with you on that point Candledave. The rubric makes it clear that at least one of the middle letters has changed (the closest letter to the mean becomes the mean). But it could have been letter 2 and 4 or letters 3 and 4. Hence my appreciation of the hints which narrowed it down.
