Thank you, Cockie. The dull thudding you can hear is a man banging his head against the wall, overcome by incredulity at he depth of his own stupidity!

Thought I was off to a great start, but struggled for awhile on the last few answers. I like seeing these variant entry puzzles every so often, but I don't care for them as much as the hidden theme, surprise, puzzles we typically see. Thanks for the construction though Kea!

Hi all. Thank you for solving help over the last few months, invaluable...

I've got most of the way through Kea's puzzle but completely stuck on 19d - I think I have crossing clues solved ok but with one letter left, nothing fits. Any hints gratefully received!

Ubergrumpy, in 19d. def. is 'variable weights'. 'Collapse' (3) + 'for one' reversed

If you’re using the Chambers app - look up the singular

Many thanks to Kea - I enjoyed this.. My only slight criticism is that one of the 'evenings' involved changes to two unchecked letters but apart from that it all worked well.

Clever and accessible puzzle. Thanks, Kea. I'll take novelty over difficulty every time.

I've got 4 clues to solve and 4 to be evened, so I had anticipated that there might be an unchecked solution, as indicated by Ozzy.

I'm struggling with

8d ( This (more racy)...) and

9d (Anti aircraft missiles... )

Would welcome a hint on either.

Also can't understand the word play on the last 4 letters of 3a which always makes me nervous.

8d as you suspect, needs treatment. 9d is more RFC than RAF vintage. 3a I saw “US gossip has entered” in three words as the word play.
