JA@80, that is correct. When I was trawling the net trying to understand things I did come across a neat video of a cup morphing, or squishing, into a doughnut!

Thanks, Gitto. For what it’s worth, I agree with you about the colour of the new thing. Not only is it necessary to make the representation work, it is also clearly mandated by D.

Thanks Smellyharry (@77): I don't think I would have got that without your input. Thanks again.

I think I have now completed this puzzle, but my solution throws up a few anomalies. In my solution I have coloured a total of 31 cells. I could reduce this to 30, or 29, by making the river move diagonally. It would have been helpful if the preamble had stated how many cells are to be coloured, but the fact that it doesn't leads me to assume that it is not critical and that any of the various options would be allowed by JEG. Also, in my solution the river takes a course in the north eastern corner that is not supported by the maps and I have a choice for the final cell. Again I assume that either would be acceptable to the checker. Do other solvers have the same anomalies, or have I got it all wrong (again)?

Bunty, you may be right. It could be me who is wrong. After all, my solution has problems (see my previous post).

0pt0 - you shouldn’t have any choices. If you follow the instructions you should just colour the various similar groups in a different colour.

Fwiw i coloured the whole grid

Candledave, thanks for that. Having re-read the D instruction, it seems to me that I still have a choice: either all 33 cells could be the same colour, or each thematic letter could have its own colour, resulting in 6 different colours being used. I favour the latter.

It sounds like you’re misinterpreting the instruction. There are only 3 types of letter

0pt0 you may find my (late in the day!) realisation of what the first two words of D mean at 80 helpful.
